Before Sex and the City and Girls, there was The Golden Girls. Premiering on September 14th, 1985, these progressive female characters never shied away from discussing controversial issues amidst their witty and humorous dialog. Often propelling plot lines to incorporate topics of sexism, marriage equality, gender roles, divorce, ageism, and HIV, writers invited the audience to observe debates about real issues that lifted the vail of politeness during a culturally conservative time period. Not to mention, the idea of having a female-centered cast all over the age of fifty is still a rare find even by today's standards.
I remember watching re-runs of the show with my grandmother over summer breaks, and loving the way she would connect with the characters. Now as an adult, I truly understand and appreciate what made The Golden Girls so groundbreaking. In honor of the show's 30th anniversary, here a few ways to channel your inner Golden Girl.
1. Tropical prints paired with metallic accessories are EVERYTHING!
2. Dress like you are about to play shuffleboard while listening to Run DMC.
3. When in doubt, channel a streetwear garden party because high tops never quit.
4. Last but not least, never underestimate the power of a chain belt. ( to be continued...)
Stay golden.
